Have you ever heard people use the term SEO? But you didn’t really know what they were talking about you so just sort of nodded your head pretending that you did. Did that ever happen to you? Well SEO is just the acronym for Search Engine Optimization plain and simple.
But first things first. Before we get into Search Engine Optimization Management, let me provide some context.
Have you ever built or wanted to build a website? Did you look into getting someone to build it for you or did you try to do it yourself? Does the prospect seem intimidating because you are not a “techie”? Well it’s really not that hard these days with all of the blogging and web publishing tools and
services out there like “WordPress” and “Squarespace”. There’s also the whole world of social media options that you can use like “LinkedIn”, “Facebook” and “Twitter”. Eureka! You Did It!
So Let’s say that you figured it all out. You picked and registered a name (domain name), built your website, and now your content (the stuff you wanted to write about) is out there and available on the world wide web. Now what? How do you actually get people to read what you wrote or buy what you are selling? There are literally more than 1.8 billion websites out there. How do people find yours? Hmm…. logically advertising would be the key. But that’s easier said than done.
How in the World Do You Do That?
Advertising in the physical world and advertising on the web are two very different animals. In the physical world, you’d use word of mouth, do a mailer, maybe take out an ad in the local paper or on TV. But how in the world would you advertise online? Keep reading…
Search Engines
Well the first thing you would do is get your site listed and ranked by the search engines. Google, Bing and MSN are popular examples of search engines, with Google being the most prominent. A search engine is a website that uses special software to collect and organize content from all over the world wide web. Then it places that content in a database and indexes it for easier retrieval. So when somebody wants to locate something, they query the database (ask it a question) and the search engine returns a list of results. The sites and or content that is listed at the top of the search results list are “ranked” high. That’s what you want for your site! To be in the to 10. That’s what we all want!
Search Engine Optimization and Management
Over 80% of websites traffic is referenced by search engines. But out of the 1.8 billion websites there are out there, most of them do not generate much traffic. Meaning they don’t get many visitors or people visiting their site consistently or very often. So that means only 20% are optimized for search engines to find their content. Well what’s the use of having a website that nobody sees? And if you are selling products, what’s the use of offering your products or services online if nobody knows that they can buy them there? Wouldn’t it be so nice to be able to make some money online? Well hello! It is possible!
Goals of SEO
There are some pretty specific goals associated with the use of SEO tools and techniques such as:
- Optimizing ranking factors to achieve a high search engine rankings
- Using keywords to create and drive relevant traffic to your site
- Generating more sales: more relevant traffic + good conversion rate = more sales
Search Engine Optimization Costs
A whole industry has been created just to do your keyword research which is one of the main tools that is used to increase traffic to your website. There are some SEO service providers that will do all of your keyword research, analysis and
provide other search engine visibility services for you. But these services can be pretty $$pricey$$. Costs can range from hundreds of dollars per month to thousands of dollars per month. Google Adwords is an example of a SEO service. You basically pay Google to list your site as a sponsored advertisement above the top 10 keyword search results. Facebook Ads is also a service that you can use to pay for traffic by creating ad campaigns.

1 Response to "SEO What is it?"
I remember doing some SEO training about ten years ago. It was for a different purpose, back then we were trying to stuff our resumes with the right words that we thought the employment agencies computerised selection algorithms were looking for.
Since then I have joined WA just as you recommend and attended the courses and learned a whole new world of SEO.
My website traffic is coming along nicely.
Thanks for all the tips and keep them coming.
